Hanging Lake Morning

from $0.00

This photograph was captured on my second hike to Hanging Lake, a true Colorado treasure tucked into the cliffs just outside Glenwood Springs. Reaching this alpine lake requires a steep and demanding climb, but every step is rewarded the moment you reach the top and take in the preserved beauty of this crystal-clear oasis. When the Grizzly Creek Fire swept through the area in 2020, much of the surrounding forest was devastated — and this lake was at tremendous risk. Miraculously, the lake and its immediate surroundings were spared, though the scars of the fire are still visible along the trail.

On this morning, I began my hike before daybreak, determined to arrive ahead of the crowds. My early start paid off: for the first 45 minutes, I had the entire lake to myself — an almost unheard-of gift in warm weather. In the quiet morning light, the waterfalls trickled gently over moss-covered cliffs, the turquoise water shimmered with reflections, and the serenity of the scene felt almost sacred.

I spent several hours here, absorbing the stillness and photographing every detail of this alpine jewel. This image is one of my favorites — a tribute to the lake’s resilience, its delicate beauty, and the rare privilege of experiencing it in solitude.
