Harvest Moon

If I am home, there are two things I do almost every day. I step out on my back deck and check out the sunrise and sunset just as it happens. The skies change dramatically in just a few minutes as it’s a balance between too much sun or darkness and what makes them light up spectacularly.

On October 7, 2025, with coffee in hand, I casually strolled out onto my deck and did my normal routing; I looked to the west to see what the mountains looked like for the sunrise.  What I saw was such an amazing scene. The full moon from the night prior was quickly falling from the sky and almost behind one of the peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The colors of the morning were very soft with pinks, purples and fluffy clouds. The moon was nestled between all of them but I knew it would disappear in 1-2 minutes.

With nothing but luck to serve me that morning, I had left my camera on the dining table from the night before when I had been out an about trying to capture the full moon (Harvest Moon). As a result, my camera was locked and loaded with my long lens ready to go. I really wanted to capture this view so I could saver the moment over and over again.

My view was blocked by some houses and trees as I was trying to zoom in on the moon and mountains, and this is what I captured. Truth is, I don’t think anything in this picture is in focus and that’s one of the things I like about it. I was really pleased to quickly get this snap before it was gone. All of this took place in 1-3 minutes. After that, the moon had fallen completely behind the mountains.
